Fresh Air and Innovation Hub tie for most irritating interview of all time
Lieberman is easily impressed with large data sets.
"arthritis which is to wear wearing away or your cartilage and your knee is not caused by running. And there are many, many, many studies which show that instead i think, and I think there's a fair number of studies which, which back this up,"
This is the best example I know of in all of medicine of reverse causality. It's as obvious as can be that arthritis causes people not to run; ask my patients as I'm a rheumatologist. Therefore if you study people who run, low and behold they don't have arthritis. Whether running causes arthritis is a difficult thing to study, as you cannot do a randomized controlled trial and that's what it would take.
"Huge" data sets don't fix anything if they are misinterpreted. Large studies that confirm an association provide no more evidence of causality than a small study that shows the same association.
"It was a huge study in California from the kaiser Permanente system where the entire kinds of system they, they actually record every patient's activity levels. And they showed that in the kaiser system, people who are, who got more than 150 minutes of physical activity a week, had 2.5 fold lower rates of dying from COVID, 1.7 times lower rates of getting hospitalized from COVID after correcting for obesity and smoking and age and sex and all the other, the other factors." This result reeks of reverse causality. The corrections didn't reveal the causal link, but they apparently didn't correct for the right things.
By the way, you can never correct for all the other factors. You can correct for all the other KNOWN factors. Geez, Lieberman hits another of my warning buzzers for ignorance.
"the major tissues that produce the anti-inflammatory molecules that keep us from being inflamed are muscles... preventing us from getting diabetes, prevent us from getting cancer, prevent us from getting Alzheimer's...atherosclerosis "
Hand waving. There are two things that people who don't do good science ALWAYS point to for causality, One is anti-inflammatories, and a thoughtful scientist calls this type of explanation "hand-waving. If anti-inflammatory molecules prevented all these things then at least SOME of the numerous controlled trials of NSAID drugs and even steroids would have shown benefits in these matters, and we would all be taking these drugs daily. They don't work.
The other one that hand wavers rely on: antioxidants. And sure enough, Lieberman also hits this chord.
" If you go for a run or a walk or whatever it is to run you, for example, you stretch your body right, you crate these little reactive oxygen species that cause damage ... so when you exercise, you also produce an abundance of antioxidants."
And if antioxidants really made any difference, then at least something would have been noticed in all the studies done by another Harvard quack, Linus Pauling, with the best anti-oxidant of them all, vitamin C. Instead, research showed that mega-doses of vitamin C are absolutely useless.
Look for those words. "Anti-inflammatory" and "Anti-oxidant" Guarantees you are dealing with a hack.
...and anyone who has submitted an actual scientific paper to an editor doesn't speak of:
"here's the data, right"
"there's just pure epidemiological data"
"communications data...was among"
"labor department data indicates"
Embarrassing.
